If she only experimented on corpses it would be morally ambiguous, and I'd agree that she wasn't truly evil. However she resorted to cold blooded murder to which is morally wrong no matter how you look at it.
No one gives a shit if little rich girl is sad, she became a serial killer she had to be stopped.
wow, I'm really surprised, it's a rare sight that an antagonist, especially a small one gets an understandable kinda sad backstory and still get the deserved punishment - now I just hope that fat noble also gets something alike since he allowed it for petty reasons
@BabyPyroshark
I don't agree that all elements in your list relate to the "morality" of necromancy.
Not going through your whole list, but here are samples of what I agree and disagree with:
- do they feel pain? Definitely. If you animate corpses and they can still feel pain and the caster knows it, even if it doesn't show, it's evil.
- is it a war? I disagree here. This is more about asking how much "evil" do you tolerate in times of war (or other similarly difficult circumstances). If necromancy is indeed "evil" in normal circumstances, it will still be evil at war. It will simply be more likely to be tolerated than in peaceful times.
- for what purpose, This is not about the morality of necromancy, but the morality of the necromancer. You can say the same of any magic.
- do undead die from the sun or from touching some kind of holy object/liquid, Definitely not related to the morality of necromancy. It might be related to the opinions of a certain god regarding necromancy, but is not an indicator of whether necromancy itself is evil. It's more about how it works and what are its limitations than whether it's evil.
- what classifies as undead? This is more about defining "necromancy" than judging the morality of this practice.
In general, I consider necromancy can be neutral, though it does depend on how this kind of magic works. Some examples:
- Animate soulless corpses like golems is definitely neutral. It might go against the "sanctity" of the corpses, but I see that as a religious argument more than a moral one.
- Being forbidden by God / a god is only relevant if he has a reason to forbid it. Accepting behavioral rules blindly from a powerful entity isn't what I consider "morality".
- Summoning dead souls to answer questions is overall neutral, though it depends how much compulsion is involved. I do consider mind control evil, so this category of necromancy could follow.
- Same as above for necromancy used as a tool to force dead souls to act against their will, with or without animating their bodies. It's basically a form of mind control.
- Necromancy used as contracts with dead people or contracts with living people that binds them after death is neutral. It's a matter where two parties decide on terms, so it's not evil in itself.
After all this is said, "neutral" doesn't mean the necromancer is not evil. That's where his purposes and applications of the magic factors in. But this would make the necromancer evil, not necromancy itself.
In this story, it's hard to tell if necromancy is "evil". It's definitely forbidden, and the necromancer was definitely "evil" since she was not satisfied with just "finding corpses", she decided to kill people to get more. But no idea if necromancy is actually evil there. We know too little about how it works. We know enough about the mage though... pitiful as her story was.
(Basically, a neglected child who turned to necromancy to get her pet back. It snowballed from there up to full-blown evil.)
A simple real-life example would be "cooking". It's neutral. If you use it to poison a target, that makes you evil. Not cooking.
@Wyrm
I mean most of that was me rambling incoherently to myself and i definitely think necromancy on average is bad and you shouldnt play with life and dont disrespect the dead but (i dont really remember my comment) i do think as with all things it depends how you use it and why and i really want more series that dont depict necromancy as this evil taboo thing that is only evil and only evil people use it for evil reasons
As you said necromancy is more of a tool
And honestly i want more good necromancy
Man I honestly didn’t expect this manga to get this dark and sort of sad. Not that I’m disappointed by any means, it’s still good, but dang. Starting to remind me of Grimgar a bit.
If there's a place for anti-intellectual moralists to seethe, the designated shitposting comment section of an english-speaking manga website is probably better than most alternatives.
@Miv when you buy a dog, you at first consider it as a plaything but soon you feel like he is your friend, he plays with you and he never hurts you. soon you will think of him as an irreplaceable family. its like saying that if your mothers dies then just get another one
@Ashlinsama It still doesn't justify killing an entire village just to get more corpses to continue research on reviving your dead dog. If the one dead is her actual family member then I can kinda sympathize with her, but she clearly went too far.
well im not justifying it! but you cant blame her since she grew up in that kind of environment in which she felt that she could be replaced anytime because her only purpose was to act like a doll. nobody taught her to differentiate between right or wrong and by the time they tried to, it was already too late
@Miv well have you seen full metal alchemist? if not then ill tell you roughly what happens. they basically carry out a forbidden ritual to bring back their dead mother. it was prolly done because of desperation since she was the only one the bros could rely on, whereas here for the the lady, the dog was the only thing she could relate to and rely on and thats why she tried to bring back the dog from death. well she couldve gone on the right path UNTIL she started killing people.
Bitch had people rape and massacre an entire village cus of a dead dog. She deserves the same things happen to her a million times over, I say! and I might even be absolutely pleasured to helped with that ordeal )
...dang, have I been watching too much of that healer anime, is that my problem?
kinda feel bad for her ngl. In my eyes she was a victim of her upbringing one in which she wasnt taught the value of life. Like from a young age she was able to perceive that she wasnt regarded as a daughter but as an object thats sole purpose was to bring in sales, thus leaving her with a fragile sense of self and security. Her dog was vitally important to her because it was the only bond she had and this gradually helped her recover as she didnt feel alone and without a purpose or sense of belongingness. Then when her dog died and her mom suggested to just get a replacement her already fragile sense of self broke and she was left with an altered view on humanity which made her so able to be able to kill without feeling. She was robbed of her humanity and empathy, and through her trauma became sociopathic. Or at least thats what i think but im dumb so idk🤷🏾♂️
