Regarding the bear thing, I remember a manga where a teacher asked one of the students something like "Are you okay? You have bags under your eyes." and then a different student wondered "She has bears under her eyes?". Perhaps it's related, like the usual Japanese puns or such?

EDIT: "クマ" (Kuma) has a double meaning which is either the animal bear or the dark shadows under the eyes. What Satsuki says in that panel is basically "Those are gross eyebags!"
