well if you have a wind mage who can create air can't you just use that instead of connecting to the surface

That's a good question, wonder if magic in this series follows the law of Energy Conservation? Particularly the fire and light elements first, since theyre thr closest elements to 'creating' their respective elements (plasma/fire from thin air? Light particles?) rather than 'altering'.

...oh god, these magic nerds are rubbing off on me lmao

So there's technically a fifth method they could use. But it would require advanced knowledge kunon doesn't have yet.

As we've seen before kunon is basically able to alter any property of water he controls. if he had the knowledge he could create a spell similar to submersion diving. By filtering in water with high levels of oxygen he would technically be able to breathe like a fish.

I just started catching up on the series, and they're using so many fun ways to handle magic it is fun to get excited.

i believe the cylindrical barrier also has structural benefits vs a pocket of air with oxygen generated by a wind mage (also makes the wind mage optional + we don't know how much it costs to sustain air generation vs manipulation).

also spoiler: the open air tube also allows for a fast getaway in case the water mages are running low on energy + beasts are starting to penetrate the barrier
