I don't know the full extent of the situation/ probably never will (they don't exactly make these things public...)
but most likely the mangaka took the job when the series wasn't as popular
now that it exploded in popularity, I wonder if they wished they had a better team behind it, cause adapting the whole LN would be an herculean task

If you don't mind me asking for spoilers, how does the LN progress? So far it seems like the manga has already fallen into a pattern:

Girl is mopping and runs into Nukumizu - Nukumizu gets acquainted with girl - girl mopes around Nuku - girl disses Nuku in every page - he waxes poetic about girl losing - girl talks to boy she likes - rejection "climax" - more moping - [at some point girl meets Yanami and both diss Nuku] - new girl introduced and cycle restarts
