Humans are not the only species to use fire. There's a species of Falcon in Australia that will use fire to smoke out prey from their Burrows. And if you want to stretch the definition of the word use then there is plenty of plants that use fire as a means of reproducing. Also saying that people in the past were primitive is extremely incorrect. They were just like you and me it's just that they didn't know as much as we did. That would be like calling a baby stupid because it doesn't know how to do arithmetic.

What's wrong with describing ancient people's as more primitive? They had less developed technology and a much more restricted knowledge base. By most definitions that would be called primitive, no?

"Primitive" generally describes something belonging to an early stage of development, or something that is basic, crude, or not advanced. Like, how is calling the primitive era primitive false? No one is saying that they're dumb in a degrading manner with it, it's just a stage of development.

You're both correct in a way, in that primitive by definition describes something of an early stage of development. That said the word primitive does carry on a lot of baggage of being dumb and unsophisticated, not that they are underdeveloped. After all, in the anthropology of the past, people did use primitive as derogatory, of Neanderthals being less sophisticated and less brilliant than us Hominids (we can discuss how this would be the basis of Cultural Darwinism or Race Realism, but I'm not going to make a paragraph only to be shit on for being political or not based). Eventually, contemporary anthropology, did find proofs that are contrary, that Neanderthals are in some ways as sophisticated as us. Yet most people, who were taught anthropology by proxy of pop science, still carry this baggage of primitive = inferior. I guess if we were to be scientific, we can use the word primitive but with the caveat that primitive doesn't mean inferior or dumb.
