Never understood how a little piece of metal protecting only from one direction could help. Are you meant to block impacts by headbutting the weapon coming at you on a perfect perpendicular? Anything else and the blade will slide off the metal onto your bare skin. Guess the author would rather they be stupid than cover up their hair.
