Redemption arcs are pretty pointless sometimes, honestly. This would be one of them. The first impression and every impression since then has just been bad. A lot of authors still try to dig such a character out of the hole they've sunk into somehow or other, but the impressions from before then are just too strong. The hate won't go away even if you now understand why the character is the way they are.
