So, in the end, he learns nothing and still won't let go of the potentially psychopathic pacifism he calls his "ideals".
What's the value of those ideals if A) you die, and B) those values do nothing but cause the death of others, specifically those you're meant to protect? Your memory and your values end up demonized and stigmatized respectively. Seriously, Japanese writers have been watching too many lolis' attack targets escape alive from invariably (by normal logic) lethal attacks. The only time you don't get this stupid element of Japanese manga/LN writing is when the setting is purely grimdark, which is a shame.
Then again, the people who write like this are the same people who think a male MC can't be competent unless he looks like and/or is an effeminate, and that any inherently masculine traits (like physical combat aptitude/competence and the physical strength to go with it) must end up in the possession of a female companion character and not that of the MC.
