People, it wasn't axed. It's an LN adaptation, meaning it probably had to adapt 2-3 LN volumes and that's it. That's the case with majority of less-than-popular LNs that nonetheless get adaptations in manga.

Yeah, this feels like a long volume ending. The last volume of the LN probably has them finally admit their love. Because of course romantic combies only ever have progress in the last chapter.
