My bet is on the latter. It feels similar to the setting of Assassin's Pride, where civilization is the sole patch of light in the middle of a much greater darkness. Not exactly a relaxing thought, I admit.

I love that series' setting and was immediately reminded of it, haha

So I feel like their entire continent is either a massive prison to hold something inside or it is a safe haven that's protecting them from something outside.

I am guessing in the flashback we saw, it was something trying to break through the barrier perhaps? So I lean more towards the barrier is there to protect the continent. But what it could be? If its not the Demon Lord, but something more terrifying, a god? I mean, back in Chapter 13 Zagan encountered a literally Demon and it put the fear of death in him, but it called him king instead, probably due to the sigil he has which is named "heart"

At least it wasn't a dump right before some super important fight or event
