They're saying he has a problem with his memory, so it's entirely possible that, with this being mostly from his PoV, he is either being prevented from learning their language, or he is not saying what he thinks he is saying (they might also be thinking that he is trying to learn and use their language, mixing it with Japanese, when he's actually not putting in any effort and just speaking Japanese)

My mom has been living in europe for like 20 years, she still can't really "speak" any french or catalan.

It's super hard.

Some people are good at learning languages, others are not. Period.

If anything, someone learning another world language in a couple of days makes no sense whatsoever.

Even if they learned it, they would always sound weird and they would be instantly recognized as a foreigner by anyone that spoke to them.
