I think you misunderstanding the character emotion from the story, or maybe your childish judgemental self esteem is too high even IRL.

I think you don't know what the meaning of weak minded is. Go check dictionary or use google by typing "weak minded definition"
As it said in Google :
weak minded = lacking determination, emotional strength, or intellectual capacity.

If he is that weak minded, he could just give up nodding the merchant and choose siding with Zagan instead. Even he would back off from Dantalian's threat and not daringly using Blitzkrieg strategy.

Well..... He lack the knowledge about that world's situation and customs. But he will do everything to pursue his idealism and try as best as he can making anyone around him not to suffer or humiliated.
