I would assume that the "point" of the age gap is to put Ooma in a position where she no longer has power over Riri in any way. Instead, by having Riri be the older party, it kind of reverses on whose court the ball is. Like, Riri is hanging out with Ooma because genuinely she likes her, not because she's her subject or servant, would be my guess.

I guess there could have been a thousand other ways for the author to do it, and I won't say that I'm fully comfortable with the age gap either, but I think that is alleviated by having Ooma be fully cognizant of her past life.
