The dragon was in on it the whole time. The dragon wanted the bastard princess to hit her and tie her up, maybe call her a dirty dragon slut. But, like Akatsuke in Log Horizon Abridged says, "Hey! No kink-shaming in the guild!"

Between the small shield completely blocking an AoE attack, the spud with the crossbow casually spanning it with one hand (and not even touching the decorative lever) and using short lances as dismounted weapons, it's clear that the manga creators are just here for the dick jokes, too, and have no clue how medieval fighting is supposed to work. I'm just glad that they didn't have someone whose sole job is to just stand there with a shield and no weapon, using the clever tactic of just... standing there... while the enemy pointlessly focuses all attacks on the shield to the exclusion of everything else. I mean, they kind of did that, but it's a lot worse in a lot of other manga.
