So, what happened in the match seems to be that Tsujii DID actually lose because the move that Kiriyama thought Tsujii could make (8-3 Uma) had accidentally been rendered out of play in Tsujii's mind by Kiriyama's move in that space (8-3 Hi) and Tsujii couldn't figure out that solution himself. So my guess last chapter was ass-backwards. Rei had the solution for Tsujii's win that Tsujii couldn't come up with himself, so Rei unknowingly thought past Tsujii and psyched himself into giving up because he overestimated Tsujiis ability. Tsujii then went into his negative persona and gave up, but that's because Rei technically already beat him (not being able to think of a solution your opponent could is a fair loss). The luck factor only came in the millisecond delay caused by Rei choking.

They both "overestimated" their opponent. As was already mentioned in the comment section multiple times, mental fortitude decided the match - Kiriyama was ever so slightly stronger.

Glad we cleared up he did in fact win purely by luck with a handful of seconds delay saving his ass from losing. Thought that was pretty apparent from last chapter but I guess some people just lack reading comprehension?
"Glad we cleared up something that completely defeats the point of the chapter" yeah no. He had a better mental and a streak of having just beat Shimada, which influenced Tsujii's mindset. All of this is explicitly mentioned.

I think overall the takeaway we're supposed to get from this whole tournament is best said by the principal - Kiriyama still has his whole life ahead of him as a pro, he's just a kid, and yet he's also having these extraordinary victories. We're not supposed to think he's actually at the tippity top level of shogi yet, but we're supposed to be excited about his career because he clearly has the potential to get there. This is just a fortuitous Cinderella run, which you see in competition now and then.

The real question that remains is... how far will it go? I always thought this being the Lion Cup and with the title of the series, that we'd see the grand finale be Kiriyama squaring off against Touya. But now I'm thinking like, is there any way he can make it that far??? I think Umino-sensei has done a really good job establishing these "power levels" such that his victories so far have felt very hard-fought and miraculous, and that any further wins will require even more amazing scenarios. I can't wait...

Luck is also a skill, dont be ashame, Kiriyama.

To reach the right state of mind to use luck Is a task that demands focus and discipline. Otherwise, luck may pass by while you are not looking.
I still consider it as Rei having just the slightest bit of mental fortitude to not surrender mere seconds before Tsuji.
