Welcome back March comes in like a lion, Rei losing his family like that at that age is really unimaginable. Losing his home, and the life he knew up until that point. Sadly he would have a rough time with the Kouda family, but I’m glad he was there for Rei to give him a lifeline.

Having this memory evoked at this time... this isn't the light, playful, puppydog shogi he's been playing in the bracket so far, suddenly all the weight of his childhood is bearing down on him. I don't think that's a good sign haha, but maybe he'll have a mid-match revelation. This also seems to explain a bit the origin of him always having two bottles with him for every match - this lingering bit of advice about bloodsugar?

Regardless of all that, the scene of Rei reaching out to his family's ashes is heartbreaking. The best friend of one of my relatives died suddenly yesterday in an accident. Someone I'd only met once maybe but even then I can feel the ripples of this loss deeply. You should never take anything for granted. People are out here dying every day.

I feel your last sentence way too much. It feels like our society has gone from "mean" to "callously cruel" to "an infernal juggernaut crushing / chewing up anyone who gets too close to one of its gears or treads, or who is adjudged guilty by our neo-feudal oligarchy of not contributing enough to the holy geas of Maximum Profit". 😔
