Wow Gotou is a pretty good guy, too. Kinda
Well, we did see him reach to catch Harunobu at the same time as Shimada, after all, when it happened. He was closer, so he probably did actually catch him, and then just transitioned into carrying him (again, we already saw him carrying the kid, we're just getting a closer look, now).
To be honest, he's always been pretty honorable and shit when it came to Shogi. He defended Shimada in the break room or whatever when people were disparaging him after his loss against Soya much earlier in the story.
There's probably shit about him and Kyoko we just don't really know. Maybe he never really touched her, but she obsesses over him, anyway. Maybe he actually has gone all the way with her, but swung back to being loyal to his wife after realizing what he was doing. We don't have any real information other than Kyoko, and she's an unreliable narrator.
Anyway, that pose Hina was making when looking up at Rei... isn't that the sort of cutesy pose girls in stories make when they're looking at a guy they like? She's never admitted it to herself, but I do think, all this time, she's been falling for him like he's fallen for her. It's just been so subtle, and she's so young and hasn't really had much, if any, self-reflection to determine such things...
I mean, I've said it over and over again, but the two of them have been gradually getting closer, far closer than the other two sisters to Rei (though Momo and Rei are quite an adorable pair in terms of a big brother figure and a toddler little sister) ever since the very beginning of this story (or at the very least, ever since that night at the end of their first Obon together in Chapter 6, where Rei stayed with Hina as she cried about her mother and grandmother)...
Reminder for everyone that what set this fire in Rei's heart was Hina's own fire, burning bright and fierce in opposition to the wrongs committed in her classroom. Wrongs that her own sister wanted her to simply ignore, just like Rei would have done himself in her shoes up until that point. Akari was literally echoing Rei's own mantra, and that wasn't something he or Hina needed at that very moment. Hina needed to hear what grandpa ultimately told her once they returned to the house, and Rei needed to be shown that some things are worth standing up and making your presence known about, fighting with all your might. Without that, he would never have been 'saved'. He would never have opened his heart. He would never have fallen in love.
Akari honestly had no chance of this boy falling in love with her. People saying he should have 'chosen' her haven't really been paying enough attention, and are just looking at Akari's figure. Rei didn't choose- events transpired as such that his choice was made for him, and the path was obvious once he started down it.
