Nobody talking about that 'shock'. Though, to be fair, it was more dramatic in the anime. We also won't get the significance until the postmortem for this game, but Rei's basically already lost because of that move, and he's just fighting as optimally as possible, now, to delay the inevitable.

Reminder that I still don't really get the actual Shogi moves, but the way these scenes are written and presented can really give you a sense of how important certain moments are, even if you are lost as to what a given piece being where means.

Geezer should have brought a kimono for Rei as well. Isn't it unfair only Souya Meijin looks all stylish? It's like saying he's all that matters and the opponent is utterly inconsequential. Even though obviously he needs an opponent for there to be anything interesting going on. Actually, I wonder if they ever put him face to face with a computer opponent? With chess, a long, long time ago it was interesting to see how gradually a computer became better than humans. Although at the same time it meant the human masters weren't such a big deal anymore. So, perhaps the shogi association would actively try to avoid repeating that very situation.

That being said, I thought Souya Meijin wears a kimono automatically in all of his games, haha. Maybe we have been shown one before where he didn't, and I just didn't pay attention.

I seems that they only wear kimono in a title game
