"Mark as read" button for PMs (or an equivalent)

This seems like the kind of thing that would already have been suggested, probably several times, but just in case...

I currently have the new mail notification showing, and the drop-down menu tells me there are three new messages in my inbox. But they're not in my inbox; they're in the bin, where I put them without reading them because they're spam. I have no intention of reading them, either, so can we have some other way of making the notification go away? Off the top of my head, I can think of several:
[ul][*]A "mark as read" button
[*]Don't count deleted messages as "new"
[*]An "empty the bin" button, or a "permanently delete" button for selected messages[/ul]

While we're at it, an undelete option would be useful too.

The delete function was planned, but for the mark as read isn't.

but, you can just click it manually and then close the tabs.

When the site switches to new forum software, most likely it will not have this problem.
