Marking a manga as “Completed” should not mark all chapters “read”

The forum doesn’t have a search function so idk if this is asked before or not. It was not in the list of Planned and Rejected Read Marker or Chapter Listing features at least.

Marking a manga as “Conpleted” right now do two things: Changing the status to Completed and marking ALL chapters as read. The second action should be removed, because it also mark any future chapters as read (most important reason) and it also mark chapters I don’t want to mark as read, as read.

If the scanlators uploaded chapter 48/48 of a manga, and every other chapter is up, I can safely assume the manga is done and therefore mark it “Completed”. However, if another group uploads a bonus side story chapter 48.1, or if another group uploads their own version of chapter x, then those are also marked as read.

People don’t check everyday to see if their completed manga get new updates, and they rely on the read marker for chapters they’ve already read. Counter argument to this can be to just not mark it Completed, which defeats the purpose of the Completed button. Readers have no way to know if the author is gonna publish a random side story 2 months later, or if the scanlators will upload a chapter of all the Twitter short stories the author did as a bonus chapter. When will the readers DO mark a manga as completed? Not to mention, there might be chapters the users don’t want to mark as read, for whatever reason. Making the Completed button auto mark everything as read just feel like a needless ability the users could’ve just do themselves.

Btw, for this chance maybe a chapter marking feature would be great. To mark certain chapters that one like to come back to, to save for later, etc. I used to bookmark on my browser some nice chapters I would check again sometimes just because they have an outstanding scene or dialogue.

You don't need to check every day nor rely on the marker to get ahold of new updates on completed series. The Follows page already works wonders, just change the Latest updates tab status from Reading to Completed. Checking it once in a while, in my opinion once a month is already sufficient.

User-written custom notes are alread planned, so you can note down important chapters for whatever reasons there.

As of now, we can't do the mass marking so the auto mark is useful. You can unmark specific chapters yourself.

@MavB_Ver I never use the Follow page, because it takes updates from ALL chapter languages. https://mangadex.org/title/7/the-world-god-only-knows haven't been updated in months and shown as "7 hours ago" in my Completed Follows list. That's because I only read English chapters, not other languages, but the Follows page was not designed to filter out chapter languages I've already filtered out. It's just not reliable enough.

The read marker is what I rely on when I check in to see what chapters I've read. Otherwise, what's the point of it? I cannot mark unread chapters I do not know are coming, since I would be marking a manga as Completed and the system auto-mark future chapters as read, even if I'm online or not.

@AbyssalMonkey They said that? That is so bizarre, because if a manga status is literally marked as Completed (not the user-button) and the last chapter you read is 48 out of 48, then why would you not mark it as Completed? Is the option obsolete and just for there for people to be happy it's there? I hope it's not what then intended to mean; it's a valid user case.

I do hope that feature would make them rethink Completed = mark everything as read.

It sounds like the "Completed" status is basically "I'm done with this series" status.

@kn1000a strange, I check my Follows and can't see any updates of TWGOK recently, the most recent is in English 6 months ago. Are you sure things work out right for you? Seems like it filters out other languages well enough for me.

Yeah, I only get english chapters on my follows. There's a setting in your account I think to set a preferred language and then you don't get updates for other languages.

Try the chapter follow page.
I believe you were checking the manga follow page, which does take other languages into account.

As @AbyssalMonkey mentioned, the current plan for custom lists should resolve your issues for 'completed' read markers once implemented, especially when combined with the ability to mass mark as read.

@MavB_Ver @gomichandesu ok my bad, I thought you can only use this

which would've taken updates from whatever chapter languages no matter your setting.

This, however must be what you meant since it does take what languages filter I chose.

However I soon realized it won't have matter anyway. Clicking "Completed" on a manga will mark all future chapters as completed as well. Even if I check in this Follows list all I will see are read markers on all latest updates.
I guess what you meant is a manual workaround where you check if the manga is updated recently and you have finished it a long time ago. But not for me, I finished quite many short manga and oneshots in a month, I won't remember whatever I finished recently and possibly will have to check each of them out to make sure I finished them.

Then again, this could've just been solve with marking Completed =/= not all chapters marked read.

@firefish5000 So what's the plan for the Completed button? Removing its "mark all chapter read when clicked" action?

If that's what the change means, then I'm all for it. The only thing I hate about the current Completed button is it marking all new chapters (that got uploaded since the time I marked a series Completed) as read too. Then once I come back I have to decide whether to trust the read markers or myself

@kn1000a As currently planned, custom lists will change everything.
Completed would become a 'Completed' list no different from a 'Reading', 'Dropped', and 'Trash Isekai' list. Reading marker shouldn't be treated differently for different lists since you may place a manga in multiple lists at the same time. You may even opt to not have a 'Completed' list at all.
A little more info on what custom lists are and what they come with.
