the team lead by Primal got time travel whammied into the past, and eventually discovered that they were on ancient Earth with the very same ship full of Autobots that crashed there way back when. Optimus Prime and everyone were just kind of, powered down in that ship for ages before they show up in the original animated series from the '80s. So, a bunch of the conflicts in Beast Wars became matters of preserving history as the Maximals Optimus Primal was leading remembered it.
