Seems like a stretch...

According to another commenter, the author retconned MC's mom into being strong while writing later parts of the story, which is why this feels so disconnected to her earlier depictions.
It genuinely does not make much sense that no one knew about her strength, in a country where reputation and strength are famed and judged. How could she be the country's strongest, yet no one remembers her as that?

It's a massive plothole since in this story we have seen plenty of talentless ppl acting cocky just because the cousin of the best friend of their roommate was considered powerful, yet the n°1 genius had to hide and cower for a single powerless b*tch? I call bulls*it.

This doesn't make sense both considering the story in itself and the general idea behind cultivation settings.

Would she allow a fat pig to lay his hands on her while she waits for her husband to return? Nah, she would slaughter the pig, then cripple her sister in law and then dropping to the imperial palace to make herself perfectly clear that if they do so much as blinking, she will make them accompany the pig.
The usual response to someone extremely powerful in your family isn't to target their kid to get... "something" (no idea what, other than dying horribly) but to pressure the powerful individual into representing them and sharing their wealth.

Yeah, I heard from someone else that, part way through writing the story, the author changed his mind and retconned the mother into secretly being strong.
Female power, I guess?
All of the effort and work from the MC in previous arcs to protect his mom, mostly invalidated now that she is literally one of the most powerful characters shown so far.
If she was THAT powerful, people WOULD know. How the hell did she "impress" MC's dad into marrying her while simultaneously maintaining the public reputation of a weak woman???

She's afraid that they'll go after her son? They've already been going after him ANYWAY. So much of the BS that MC had to go through could've been prevented if she wasn't hiding her strength.
