I blame it on instructors. Even interns in some high turnover job have a day of hands on experience with trainer before they do any job.

Pointing out his actions as insanely skilled is great and punishing him for thinking it's normal or downplaying it even better. But boy does this MC seem slow. He reacts like a dumbfounded kitten stuck in a pit of molasses. It's not that complex to think that he is highly skilled in controlling & manipulating magic or to understand that he grew up in a family of incredibly skilled magic users. Just not having magic power himself doesn't make him completely inept. That doesn't even make sense. It'd be like someone who is deaf thinking that scoring perfect 100s on every test is normal? Like I'm sorry for your disability, but the ****? Being deaf doesn't make you brain dead. It makes it harder to learn as you can't just hear use auditory senses at all, but like that's it. If anything a deaf person would have to put in more work, so they put in more work and score higher than everyone else and still think they're average or even dumb? No. If I was at school with that person I'd be so pissed off. Even if it's like an "I was home schooled and all my siblings scored this high." That's just insulting to the family members who deserve recognition for definitely NOT being normal.

That's where the MC is with me. You have this disability yes and it sucks in this magic oriented world. But you've very VERY clearly worked past that and are at the very least in these specific fields that don't require having your own magic out performing your peers. Some self esteem issues from not having what most everyone else does is understandably. But that trait clearly isn't required to be successful in theoritical magic concepts or even controlling and applying magic in the real world. The wilful ignorance is not cute.

Isn't that this? They went to do the job together, told him what to do and repeatedly not to worry/stress over anything, and the intention was just to get some basic field work experience without danger or need to rush. Magic adds another layer to it because they had no way of knowing he'd see something that detailed. The MC had also been warned never to take in magic from a dragon vein just like everyone else knew not to. Part of the training is for them to do it separately to avoid bias in the data. It's not their fault that the MC ignored what was said and kinda went off the rails.

NGL, your comments make it sound as if you're blaming the MC for the way he is rather then the author, but you are essentially correct. The author lacks the writting ability to properly protray a sheltered prodigy without making him look like a incompetent clown.

My question: in his entire 22 year of life, not a single one of them, himself nor his family, thought of creating a magical energy battery for him to use as a replacement for his nonexistent magic energy source?
Honestly, a great question. The easiest in-universe explanation is: "No one has ever needed to store magical energy for personal use, so no one has ever considered a storage device for magical energy."

It's easy for us to go "that's a no brainer" but even with Electricity, we had the idea of "can we store this" pretty quickly but the first "charge a storage device to be used elsewhere" was the lead-acid battery in 1859, ~100 years after we could reliably generate electricity. In this universe, they do store magic energy for magical tools, but to make a leap in logic of "that could power me" is like going from "my laptop has a battery" to "my laptop's battery can be used to power a toaster."

Yeah the talk before he drew it made it seem like he was scanning an entire country or something.
Deliberating if cutting off the things not directly related to the nearby town to save time and deciding to include everything...
How the hell did it turn out to be the same scale as theirs with just more text?
The map was already drawn beforehand, they're just meant to fill in where monsters are. The scale would always be the same, though he could see further and had to limit the scope.
His concern was how to count each one, list the species, and keep track of it all. Given there's at least 800 monsters in that mapped out area (500ish around the mountains and 300ish in the forest), that would be a lot of info to put on one page, so the spell he used let him do it as neatly as possible.

He acts like a dumb private in the "active-stupid" phase of a soldiers career.

And they treat him like one.

And it's perfect; seeing corrective action being properly applied brings a very specific smile to one's face.

he only had to do push-ups because she didn't even listen to what he had to say before starting
