lol, there goes the hero's moral high-ground. Sure, the "father" didn't keep his word and make the hero the heir, but since the hero isn't even his real son, where does the dryad mom, the hero and the king get off blaming him for it? The dryad mom reneged on the agreement first after all, so what right do they have to complain about the outcome? If anything, the "father" looks like the victim here since he's the one who's going to get blamed for the diplomatic breakdown even though it's the dryad mom who refused to commit. For all we know, her being cold towards her husband is the only reason he even took a second wife and alternate succession became an option.
Or he was having an affair before marriage or something. We lack information after all.

So the mom is a 403 and-frankly-broke the promise in the first place. Without even knowing, or perhaps knowing, the dad is completely justified in not making Ain the heir to his Dukedom. His bloodline would've been cut off if he did.

@SeryjVolk are you sure we're reading the same story? It was specifically stated that the condition was "her child" not "their child". The mother didn't go back on the deal, the father did.

Besides, the father looks like someone who would take another wife anyways even if the mom did love him. He seems like the unfaithful type. Maybe that's why the mom refused to root with him? And what's more, that idiot guy didn't even try to gauge the MC's abilities even knowing he's a child of a Dryad. If he think with his brain instead of his genitals, he would have at least tried to curry the mother-son's favor (considering the mother-son's from a superior kingdom) instead of shunning them. He's unfaithful and an idiot, that's it.
Unfaithful? Olvia hypnotized him and didn't give him a child. The man's blood line was going to be ended by that woman.

Now I can see why the father and Ain's mother didn't really bond. Mother never fully trust the father and his actions throughout their marriage didn't dissuade her. I wonder the father didn't trust the mother also because she had always been wearied and perhaps on guard with him. So it became the cycle of distrust that perhaps also effect Ain as well.

However, having blood relations is not a requirement for father to love his son. Good adoptive parent did just that. The father choose to neglect his son. And that was the crux of it.
You know, not ending a man's blood line by cucking him might also have something to do with it. Like, if he chose to adopt Ain, that would be his choice. As is, he wanted to have kids of his own, and Olvia decided to not give him that.

Frankly, he did decent for the kid who wasn't his.

Now, this clears up motivation why Ain's 'father' went with the second wife and her son instead. He might be hypnotized, but that doesn't mean oblivious. He and Ain's mother didn't trust each other, effectively crossing each other legs in their power games. They went so far that it lead to this situation. You can't really point clearly who is the victim of this deal. As the king said, it was a bad decision from the start.
Olvia's decision.
