Their reasoning for staying is just sad.
What's even sadder is that you KNOW there are people like this even in real life.
Well, not as many nowadays I guess, but there still are some
They'd rather starve, let their children die than to leave their ancestral home for the time being.

What an asshole, beg others for food with the reason given that his child will die otherwise, So far fair enough, but then he says they will all stay in a place, where they are certain to die, because their ancestors used to live there? So glossing over how he is willing to let his child starve to death for no good reason, if they are planning on staying and dying why drag travelers down by “robbing” them of the food they need for their journey? They are clearly not willing to do anything for their own survival and are just staying put and hoping someone else will come fix their problem for them. All in all , I don’t really have much sympathy for them.
