Pretty tired of reading manga where the mc is a sub, I've looked and there's about four or five its not BL and the MC is a Dom. Its weird considering 50 shades of grey, with a male dom and female sub, sold hundreds of millions, yet manga you never see that. Its by and large male mcs weak, subs, masochists or passively into getting bullied (except when mc is not OP).

I often ask myself if submissive male MCs are so common, are they a self insert reflecting the male manga communitys majority interest?

I'm blaming moe culture, personally. Japanese men (well, a lot of men really) seems to have forgotten how to talk to pretty women and put them on a pedestal, instead of treating them as a person. So any interaction at all puts them in a state of anxious nervousness that they either A) become a completely submissive dishrag, or B), crack and become a caricature of alpha chad asshole. There's very few inbetween examples.

Even with that, there's still the sense that there's a yearning to not be a sub, since they always want to 'protect' the vastly stronger/more capable female MC. Manga can be really telling about the thoughts of a Japanese man...
