I was like.. Yes! Yes! here it is! the "I don't have a type, I'm studying to be a monk.." line and oh was I so disappointed...! >.<
At this point even Medaka himself has forgotten. No use in bringing it back though, as the guy can just be considered a space junkie who loves cats.Nope, author totally forgot about the monk stuff.
A small part of me was hoping that he would reveal that here. I'd have been very curious to see how things played out from thereI was like.. Yes! Yes! here it is! the "I don't have a type, I'm studying to be a monk.." line and oh was I so disappointed...! >.<
As far as appearances go, the Buddhist clergy of Japan does not differ substantially from its counterparts elsewhere. Its members live in temples or monasteries, wear monastic robes, and shave their heads. Appearances, however, can be deceptive, for Japanese male Buddhist clerics do not generally observe monastic precepts, nor are they expected to. In fact, the great majority are married—at a whopping 90 per cent, the share is significantly higher than for the population in general.
So, what are the current bets for a fiancee arc vs "parents coming over to tell their son to procreate" arc?But for most, getting married is not just tolerated, it has become almost a requirement. Producing a son who can take over as temple custodian is often the only way for an abbot to ensure continuity from one generation to the next.
So annoyingI was like.. Yes! Yes! here it is! the "I don't have a type, I'm studying to be a monk.." line and oh was I so disappointed...! >.<
Medaka isn't the MC, Mona is.About time the MC has gotten a hint of personality and emotions beyond the usual fluster from the author. Makes a character so much more interesting than the usual harem MC crap where the MC is left intentionally blank so every drongo reading it can self-insert.
May I introduce you to the concept of multiple main characters? Medaka clearly is the male MC in this story.Medaka isn't the MC, Mona is.
Okay, if you want to get pedantic, when you have multiple main characters or characters that all share center stage it is generally called an ensemble cast.May I introduce you to the concept of multiple main characters? Medaka clearly is the male MC in this story.
Is this the very first time you're reading a harem rom-com? The male MC being like that is a conscious design choice. They're supposed to be as self-insertable as possible, so readers can pretend that this could be them with the least amount of mental friction possible. That means as bland a personality as feasible, as little of own thought as can be portrayed. And yes, of course that also means you'll get the thoughts of the girls being crazy for the male MC most of the time, because not only does it further the goal of giving the male MC a personality if you simply don't look inside his head, it also demonstrates to the reader how desirable a love interest their MMC self-insert (and thus themself) is to the girls. So yeah, of course most of the perspectives will be from the girl's view (and in this case, mostly Mona as clearly the main girl, which by the way demonstrates that this cannot be an ensemble cast). That does however not mean that the MMC isn't an MC - they are, by design, the mostly uncontested male in the story, and just about the only male perspective you ever get, even if they're kept intentionally simple and usually fizzle out in either being flustered or the usual "is she interested in me? No, can't be" nonsense.Okay, if you want to get pedantic, when you have multiple main characters or characters that all share center stage it is generally called an ensemble cast.
Medaka may be the male lead, but he is hardly a character as the post I was replying to said. Other than being in training to be a monk we have known nothing about him. We haven't even seen him training. He takes no action on his own or moves the plot forward.
Mona takes action, she has desires and a goal. We spend most of the time in her head and see her thoughts. She is a main character, Medaka is the object she is pursuing. Instead of the boy chasing the barely defined girl, the girl is chasing the barely defined boy.
