I'd say definitely not worth it, but on the other hand, the dude does dream about a house on a habitable planet. It's not worth it for a mercenary as it would bind him to the empire (and the will of the government) and there would be expectations, if not responsibilities, but it could make gaining land on a planet much easier.

I'm not sure, though, that his deeds would still be enough to earn a noble rank. Much cheaper for the empire to give him another medal, some money, pretty speeches, and a bit of publicity. They might suggest a contract to bind him a little bit. He shouldn't accept any contracts. Maybe if there's a really petty nobility rank, like knighthood, that doesn't cost the empire anything and is not hereditary, it could happen. The empire would lose nothing, but it would bind Hiro to the empire for the rest of his life. Existing noble houses would hardly care about another knight appearing.
Top level of mercenary equal to Viscount why he bother to inherit real nobility? Better free than trapped in this Empire at best their territory probably only some solar system / galaxy

been thinking what'd i'd do if i was in hiro's situation with his skillset.
probably become a piloting teacher? as much as i like action and whatnot i do like to stay safe, and im not exactly super brave.
if hiro started teaching piloting i'd imagine it'd run into a few situations of 'how'd you know that?' in a few backwards situations where something seems the obvious thing to do but the opposite, maybe even deadly dangerous, is the right way.

Aint no way any student can match the experience of multiple lifetimes worth of knowledge and experience and instinct. Hiro learns from a game where you would just respawn when you die.

While some of that knowledge might be transferable, most of Hiro's ability comes from who and what he is rather then what he knows. As @Pyras points out, some of the twitch reflexes and combat abilities come from time spent as player in a game, the majority of Hiro actions and responses to the universe around him are because he is a reincarnator with special abilities and a special ship.

So it would be hard to say how you would react if you were placed in Hiro's position.

That's inaccurate.

The only reason Machine Intelligence like Mei are good here because they can make more accurate attacks unlike Humans (because of their high calculation abilities) especially with long range shots.

There is no "detect intention" stuff here with Crystal Beings, as even normal human can attack and kill Crystal Beings.

Also, just like how Crystal Beings are dangerous to Humans or other Living Beings, they are also dangerous to Machine Intelligence.
He did get some things wrong, but not all of them...
  • Crystal life forms can in fact detect intentions, it isn't just the Mother Crystal... they will explain more about the psionic powers way later when they go to the Holy Vuelzarus Empire to learn about them as Hiro ends up becoming a Psionic Monster that can single handely (without even using Krishna... which will later evolve and become even more OP) destroy an entire army (poor Ixamal House... they deserved it tho) and could easily wipe out an entire galaxy if he ends up snapping
  • Even tho psionic powers don't work against machines I wouldn't say that the Androids are a counter to crystal life forms as the later can corrupt and assimilate anything that they touch (you can probably guess what would happen if they end up hijacking an AI with access to their network...), they are way more dangerous than what they show here and it makes the fact that Hiro goes into close combat against them way more reckless than it seems

Edit:
I noticed that in the message below you mentioned that the cystal life forms have psionic powers... so why did you say that they aren't able to detect intentions then? as from what I remember psionic powers are in fact related to emotions/intentions...

Can you point to a chapter that shows it's "accepted"? In an earlier chapter where it happened everyone seemed confused (though they just ignored it afterwards).
Where exactly has that been established in the manga? When this happened for the first time, the whole fleet was surprised, including (as you noticed) the MC's crew.
You just read some spoilers outside of spoiler tags. We're about to enter the plot of Vol.7 from the novel. What he's talking about is probably at least a few volumes forward.
Currently in the manga they just have no idea why exactly it is happening and just go along with "yeah that just happened" since the only thing they (the empire) were fighting so far was basically some scouting crystals and maybe occasionally some crystals from broken singing crystals probably. They have no idea why this happens and for more information you just either read novel, wait for more spoilers in the comments or wait for the manga to catch up and explain. (I recommend reading the novel to meet the best girl sooner).

Yeah, he probably did read some spoilers tags... but I wouldn't say that the empire has zero knowledge about psionic powers, while it's true that they don't know much about them and they haven't been able to use them as weapons yet... from what I remember the emperor has the ability to read minds and I would really doubt that they have zero ideas of the types of weapons that their neighbors use.
If by best girl you mean Kugi then I do agree

None of the characters even question how they could hear a "scream" in space? The thing can obviously affect their minds for that to happen, they should be wondering to what extent.
It's implied to be some kind of psychic effect, kinda like how telepathy works.
And considering we later find out that psychic abilities are very much a real thing in-story, with hiro being a extremely powerful one to boot, it's not hard to imagine.

This series is based on the Light Novel series, which is based on the draft Web Novel.

Both are ongoing, with currently Light Novel having 18 volumes, while Web Novel has 590 chapters.

The Manga is currently covering the plot of Light Novel Volume 6.

I wonder how much content the upcoming anime can adapt, assuming the usual 1 cour of 12 episodes. Will it reach up to/exceed where the manga is now?

Once they sit down and think about it the critical difference between Mei and everyone else firing will become pretty obvious, I bet, just not as a heat of the moment thing. (I expect Mei to bring it up if no one else does, especially if someone mentions the screams).

The presumptive difference is the EML. All the other weapons are energy-based; and it's been stated that crystal lifeform parts are used in laser weapons as they're exremely useful for conducting energy.

So the crystal can detect energy projection and deal with it, but can't do anything against a rock to the face out of nowhere.

Maybe they will cover up to the end this arc.

Normally a 12 episode season will cover 3-4 novels when it's a novel based property.

I don't think that many people dislike her personally, but she comes with a bunch of inescapable political entanglements he just doesn't want.
I was talking not that Characters hated her, I meant the readers. Somewhere in previous chapters and on different websites there are quite the number of people who don't like her for some reason
So strange

For the most part, people won't keep reading it this long if they don't like and support the protagonist. That makes the things that matter to him important, so the fact that he cares about the politics means many readers will reject her as a romantic candidate as well.
