@Legion499 it becomes even worse of a comparison when you realize that even if a currency exchange is fixed, the actual buying power of each currency will naturally fluctuate. An example I can think of is USD and CAD. Used to be that these two were so close in value that it did not matter if you used CAD in the USA or USD in Canada. Nowadays, the exchange rate is just far enough apart that most places will heavily oppose taking the other country's currency simply because it is too much of a hassle.

He should rather compare how much a space steak cost to a restaurant price, not how much yen he would get in non-existant exchange.

So a new guy with no ties to a guild brings to a space station rare ore worth millions and that doesn't put a target on his back?

And he doesn't question where it came from?

Oh ok

he doesn't question it because he knows how much was in his cargo bay when he last logged off lol
otherwise, transactions are probably logged but confidential with the in-station brokers; when considering he's literally never been logged before, the most others can make of him is 1. dangerous spy, 2. space hermit, 3. newbie undercover agent (hence backed by dangerous spies)
in any case, if you're big enough to know about him, you're big enough to be wary of whether he has backing or not.
if you're not big enough to know about him, he just looks pretty normal, aside from a good ship.

I love his comment about the disparity between her chest size and her conceit. This guy!

@SmokeWagon
If someone with many tons of rare material showed up at your colony and was selling it for a good price and even destroyed some pirates and brought directions to their base, would you look the gift horse in the mouth or just be glad he showed up? Sometimes it's best to just nod your head and let it go.

Just in case anyone wondering why Elma said her name has more character, it is because they were basing it in Katakana, エルマ(Elma) ヒロ(Hiro), would be nice if the scanlator explain this but I understand that feelof wanting to gatekeep against weeblets.

A sci-fi space opera with elves.
Kinda like Star Wars but with much better looking Yoda.

Hiro: "and if 1 enel equals 100 yen then..."
You just had to go there didn't you? You just had to compare money that does exist [enel] with money that doesn't [yen].
It's only made worse by the guarantee that 1 enel = 100 yen is false. Even in reality a U.S. dollar does not equal 100 yen. [Nor does any other currency.]
Why is this a recurring theme? Do most Japanese not understand "equivalent value?" Compare your money with something like a meal or rent. Don't compare real money with monopoly money.
I mean, that is what he's indirectly doing. He's saying that basic groceries or lodgings that you can buy for 100 yen is roughly what you can buy for 1 enel. That's what estimating exchange rates means.
