I know, right?!?
I feel like all these JP "White Base" Gundams or "SDF-1" Veritechs have ruined my view of SciFi ship design.

Back in the day, swept wings for F-14 Tomcat was the tits, and that was it.
Even Blue Planet: War In Heaven deploying missile bays/railgun on UEF tactical bombers was enough.

Now as soon as I see a Capital Ship, all I can think of is "how does this fold".

Heh.

Reminds me of playing through the "Gauntlets" in Descent: Freespace waaaayyyyyy back in the day.

Once you deal with all the mobs, the big chunky targets are practically helpless once you get inside the firing arcs of their point defense guns. It's like being a mosquito and going after that spot on their back that they can't reach no matter what.

Betcha that's gonna be what he does here. Take care of the pesky mobs, and then get literally up in their ass and whale away on them until he digs a hole into something important. Like a reactor. ;)

Fun fact that I only learned in Freespace 2 -- after meticulously disabling the engine subsystem of a Shivan cruiser, in a mission it was scripted to jump in, chase, destroy an ally frigate, then jump out (saving the doomed ally):
  • Fighter-based weaponry can take a capital ship down to 1%, and destroy all subsystems.
  • But unless the weapon system has the "Huge" tag in game metadata, you CANNOT take capital ships below 1%.
So I had a cruiser trussed up like a turkey after dodging anti-fighter beams for an hour, all subsystems knocked out.
With no way to kill it. I was livid.

Dodging, or shooting down missiles is easy if the ship setup is fast enough.
Projectile ammo to some extent since like missiles they also have a certain flight speed.
But lazers? That's just crazy.

Everything from the WN is still intact, the LN just adds maybe an extra chapter or two for each arc.
in the dwarven planet visit, that ended rather peacefully in WN, but in the LN, a hostage rescue chapter got added as climax
Yeah, honestly though I can't remember if the dwarf girls left amicably or if they left as a sort apology or debt collateral of sorts. I need to reread the wn, since a lot of it is translated online

Not really.. Those big turrets that can vaporise him in one shot tend to have terrible turning rates, so if his radial velocity relative to the turrets is high enough the big 'uns will miss. Barely.
Enough ECM to throw targetting off a bit helps as well...

This was really well done in EVE Online, where size did regularly not save you, and you could take out a battleship with a couple of destroyers without a single loss.
IF everybody knew what they were doing..
And of course... wise battleship captains learned to stagger their shots, and pre-align to have the Unwary fly into their killing field... And there were trap setups specifically meant to toy with wannabe pirates, and....

Of course... the battleships escorts can move to spots where the targets' radial velocity is far less, and more predictable, because of the need of the target to maintain that angular speed relative to the Big Bads, so our MC is still facing a serious tactical problem, but he can at least take out the small fry fast to reduce incoming DPS, and hope the Cavalry arrives in time..

Talk about shitty balance, Hiro is playing like Elite while the enemies are stuck in EVE's .
Any pilot/gunner/commander that knows their shit would know using anything but fixed guns is nigh futile against skilled enemies, and yeah the chaffs and ECM alone can practically make the whole automated gunnery tracking useless for a while.
The Cruiser/Battleship this chapter was an idiot dropping in at brawling range instead of 100-200km while keeping distance away and just snipe it out before it closes in on them.

Then again if Elite got EVE's targeted ECMs and signal dampeners, it'll slightly shake the PvP meta, while in PvE, everything but Thargoids will turn into a joke.
