Some real USS Johnston energy. A ship that was so bold the Japanese battleships thought it was a battleship, because no destroyer would be insane enough to attack a ship it couldn't sink. Or so they thought.
As a result, they used armor penetrating rounds instead of explosive rounds, which flew through the hull and did relatively minor damage for most of the fight until they realized it was a destroyer.
It sunk, but did save most of the rest of the fleet it was with and turned the battle into a tactical tie and strategic victory.
