If he wanted to hide his identity, i think making up a story where he has one of the mages ships is a bad idea. Now everyone who knows the story might want to steal, buy, hire, or see it. Why did he even have to say that? There's little need to convince them he can handle the spice run. I doubt the merchant guild can forbid him from attempting dangerous trade routes.
