I feel like the author's leaning on whichever one is most convenient at the time, and it's getting to that point where he needs to tie it all together somehow.

If anything, it's the MC who's weird for going all "WHAT WOULD YOU INVITE AN UNEXPERIENCED PERSON FOR". What fucking experience are you even talking about?
