The reasoning for not telling mom is much better here than the start. Not wanting your mom to worry about you doesn't make sense when you're in a coma, and she thinks there's no hope that you'll come back. Not wanting mom to start butting in on your romantic fantasy life? Yeah, I can totally get that one.
