I'm pretty sure the plot twist is that the dog thing isn't a separate ghost but like, the dads tail or something.

That would explain why it is always next or behind him.

It would be pretty funny if that was a manifestation of the part of him that ate Miko's pudding

3. Dad is a pure spirit and we have only seen Michiru only eat the ugly ones, she doesn't eat pure spirits like dad.
4. Dad's ghost is hella strong

Yeah I've been wondering about the strength of pure spirits.

Ah, I just remembered. That chapter where the kid lost his amulet in the river. The pure spirits following him was able to subdue a strong looking river spirit a little, just by pointing at it. IIRC the river spirit didn't even try to touch him.

Seems like they are strong but not in the way an ugly spirit can be strong.
