Because they want to add a love rival, but are afraid of readers' reactions if they add a male love rival. By adding a lesbian love rival, they can reassure readers that the love rival will never be a serious threat and that there is no risk of NTRbait.

This is less egregious in comparison. We're almost certainly still going to be back here next chapter. The people that like it, like it, and the people that don't are probably not dropping the work as long as this new character doesn't usurp the ML's position-- it has to get that bad.

Rent a Hoe is kinda an exception. Its peak wish fulfilment for beta Japanese cucks, who will openly let their wifes fuck other dudes if that will mean they wont divorce them, and kids who already are like genetically predisposed to be like that in future.

As for lesbian rivals in general. To be honest I didn't read that much mangas so I actually barely remember them happening. If I ever remember one - they probably "converted" into non-lesbo and became a harem member/rival for the girl they initially crushed on. Also why its used is maybe cause its like a nothing burger? If MC crush is straight, then lesbo "rival" isn't really a rival as long as the straight girl isn't bi and/or dude is such a beta that he actually fears he could lose to the lesbo.
