I'd try to drag them out of character. That would probably be my #1 goal: Disrupt the story.
Not even necessarily just "change the bad ending" but something like "completely change faction", "utilise different skills", "completely destroy and rebuild whatever reputation they originally cultivated"... but the very first course of action would be to exploit foreknowledge of the plot to deliberately push it off the rails.
