In my experience using just hope and water is good enough. I only ever consistently use shampoo after a haircut, and do a double rinse at that, just to get all the tiny fragments out. Maaaybe once or twice between haircuts if I got some contaminant in my hair or accidentally squirted out shampoo instead of soap from one of the many nondescript bottles in my shower.
