Considering how she is, I HAVE to imagine that she likely acted weird when she was a child, and while other kids either bullied or stayed away from her, he stuck close. Would explain why her feelings for him are so strong and why he's so nonplussed by her odd personality. New Year's firework chapter shows he's willing to go out of his way to make her happy.
