Whats wrong with Bell Pepper? Why does everyone hate it? That shit slaps.
Plants evolve to be bitter and spicy in order to discourage animals from eating them, or even poison those animals. What's weird is not that some humans dislike bell pepper. Rather, what's weird is that many of us can eat it at all. Weirder still that many enjoy it.

Regardless, obviously not everyone hates bell pepper, but disliking it is associated with picky children, because children are more sensitive to bitterness. This is actually a good evolutionary adaptation that helps children survive the stage of childhood in which they put their mouths on everything.

Personally, I think Japanese parents who try to force bell peppers on their children should be made to eat lots of carrots and lactose until they cry uncle. Sorry, I mean cry oji-san.

First time Mimi is shocked speechless.
All her blood suddenly rushed to a single place. And no, I’m not talking about her cheeks…

I absolutely cannot stand the wobbly fatty part around industrial ham, but my grand-parents always tried to force me to eat ham. I had to actually vomit while trying to eat a slice for them to understand that I wasn’t being picky, I just physically couldn’t eat that shit.

Apparently the soil in Japan is acidic because of all the volcanoes, so peppers grown there have a sorta acrid taste that you don't get in other places.

Perhaps Roy will explain this to Mimi sometime around their tenth wedding anniversary.
That explains my confusion as to why when I try them here, as long as they’re not overdone they taste pretty great.

It also makes sense why it’s so common for mangas showing kids hating peppers because in general kids can’t handle bitter things as well.

Its just out of all the vegetables I commonly see in asain cuisine, Bell pepper is far from the most bitter of the bunch, especially when cooked. So to me it seems weird that it seems to be the JP version of brussel sprouts / broccoli. Maybe its due to what another user pointed out and JP bell peppers are extra bitter due to the volcanic soil.

Funny thing is that brussel sprouts and broccoli have been bred to be much more palatable than they were just a few decades ago. I don't think this has happened with bell pepper. It seems cruel to force kids to eat The Most Bitter Vegetable out of all the choices there are.
