It was published in a shonen mag. A shoujo artist could literally keep the same style and storyline and it’d be considered shonen if it somehow made it into Jump for instance. I’m guessing that’s what happened here, where the magazine that published them was maybe desperate, or maybe the author/artist was desperate.
