The japan mans can't self insert to anybody with eyes, you see japanese men don't actually have eyes. They use a highly refined natural sonar. I mean, how much are you gonna do with a child that is not related to the protagonist? You will either show off that they are great with kids, that they are shit with kids, or the kids being blunt AF and yelling out something rude that accidentally progresses something or reveals an insecurity. Pretty much anything else would be creepy unless suddenly the parent becomes an important figure.

But the other thing is that a kid is much easier to approach and console than a random peer on the street. At least in modern society. So it's more natural than some key stranger who becomes a buddy without a lot of context.
