I love the portrayal of Sam, the idea of a scary angel isn’t exactly a new one nor is the idea of a biblically accurate one. But the fact that he’s terrifying, accurate, and clearly good is definitely a pleasant oddity.
Even better is how his omniscience and otherworldly power is displayed. He doesn’t fight or even make a move. There’s no feeling of power levels or even conflict. When bird dude decides to be wicked again Sam already has seen and without movement has condemned the actions in his heart and executed him.
It’s a really cool take on a character that a lot of other authors would’ve likely portrayed as stereotypical sexy blonde winged person with halo. With Sam you get the feeling “DO NOT BE AFRAID” was a pretty good opener for most introductions.
