Well, he currently doesn't have any skills to hamper. He's a novice lower than novice when it comes to fighting and a coward. Him using her as a safety net to strengthen himself is a good idea but he ruined it himself by admitting that he wants to showoff to her.
It's like a beginner in boxing trying to showoff for a girl who's a MMA pro.

Actually that is what I mean, he has no skills at the moment so if he relies on her too much he will never develop any. Thing is as you said at least for fighting it seems he doesn't rely on her at all and as you also said for the most wrong reason ... or so it seems. As shown in this chapter he went from a bottom feeder to producing VASTLY better results so part of me thinks she is helping a little in the off screen fights. I can imagine his results would be THAT much better just by her showing him where the mobs are.
