Agreed; this is really something I'd have preferred have been foreshadowed earlier in the work. Like, have there be instances where they almost seem to read his mind, or act in sync unconsciously, etc.

Then the MC's epiphany during the match would be much more satisfying because it would be an "oh so THAT's what it is, I know I can do this" moment instead of a complete asspull.

While I agree, I also don't think an ability that sums up to "they're super on the same wavelength" is something that necessarily needs more exposition. It's basically just a version of "shonen power of friendship" type powers, so really all I think's needed here is an acknowledgment that he's more in-tune with his summons than other people are, which is basically what they did.
