I believe most of us know Stargate at least by name, and some of us may have even read The Salvation War. Let's name the manga (and why not anime too) where modern military force goes to wreak havoc in fantasy worlds.
Gate where the JSDF fought
Stargate appears in middle of Tokyo and medieval fantasy army comes through to start a war. Meet Tokyo Metropolitan Police and Japan Self-Defense Force. Main character is a Japanese Ground Force lieutenant commanding a recon squad. This manga (and related anime) takes military action seriously, which means gun is significantly stronger than sword. Manga has also plenty of world building (anime makes cuts) and some humor. And protagonist gathers a harem of fantasy girls, including elves and a human mage. It's all reasonably well done and is one of my favorite manga of all time (YMMV).
Nihonkoku Shoukan
Much like Gate, except in this case whole Japan (or significant part of it) goes to fantasy world with no way back. This manga don't have one main protagonist, but wide range of characters get screen time. JSDF military power is even more OP than in Gate. Author don't seem to care about being "fair" to less advanced military forces facing Japan's war machine.
Gun-Ota ga Mahou Sekai ni Tensei shitara, Gendai Heiki de Guntai Harem wo Tsukucchaimashita!?
What a mouthful. This is isekai of reincarnation variety. Japanese metal worker gets stabbed to death and reincarnates in a fantasy world. With magic phlebotinum ( https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AppliedPhlebotinum ) he makes firearms and recruits monster girls to use them. In training he goes full on Sergeant Hartman (poor girls). Though gun porn is quite detailed and described, weapon effectiveness takes artistic license: AK-47 makes a hole on the stone wall but has trouble against some monsters. But what's this... Male lead shows actually interest to the girls and even gets married!
Saga of Tanya the Evil
Japanese salaryman gets overrun by a train (instead of a truck) and is reborn as an orphaned girl. The world and its wars have strong World War vibes going on, but also magic on top of it. With exceptional talent for magic and shortage of food in orphanage, protagonist joins the army in early age and rise through the ranks in short order. She is like Darth Vader and Jack Tramiel ("like Darth Vader, but he don't need the Force") in adorable/creepy loli package. If you're looking for gritty and traumatizing war manga (or anime), this one is well worth a look.
Do you have any recommendations for me?
