I thought it was impolite and against social etiquette to have music playing out loud like that on the subway in Japan. People usually keep quiet, and even talking on the phone isn't well received on a subway. You'd have to get up and go to the compartment between the train cabs to take the call if the train has those space, or silence it and call back after you get off the train.
