Orange cat fur can get darker over time, but it has to do with nutritional quality, not weight. The most dramatic examples of cats going from light to dark orange are almost always adoptees who had been living as strays. Orange cats have a reputation, deserved or not, of putting weight on more easily and losing weight less easily than other phenotypes, so it's an easy mistake to make.
