Wilderness cabins are sometimes locked when out of peak season to cut down on maintenance, accessible only to mountaineering clubs or park management. Folks going up in the shoulder or off-season won't be able to use them, but they are generally built in safer places and may have amenities accessible from the outside, which makes them preferred places for camping.
