This seems similar to Log Horizon were the flavor text of weapons and items started to trigger real effects after a while, so a item to send away spirits that near to no use in the game could have real power in the realized fantasy world.
Is even possible mc reacted to it by unlocking a new sword and we will see it in the next chapter.
I don't think the witch gave the young girl a monster taunt, even if I'm sure that the merchant expedition and cadets trial being in that mountain was orchestrated to kill them both.
